I've visited Texas twice so far-Houston and Austin-and thought it seemed like a fairly good place to live-friendly culture, warm climate, and good economy.

How do you like it? Do you live in a city or in the country? I live right in the middle of DFW, in Arlington. I like it okay. You couldn't pay me enough money to live in Houston. Even worse heat and humidity, and the traffic jams rival anything you'd see in Los Angeles. I've visited there about half a dozen times over the years, and each time I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
Austin is nice. It's also one of the most liberal environments in Texas, which is otherwise filled up with the 'Murica crowd. Austin has also become a bit of a tech mecca over the last years, so if you're in this field it's a good spot.
Spiceworks is based there, for example. The Texas economy is pretty great. Largely due to how diversified we are, the sheer amount of industry we have, and the size of our population.
I can say this, in my entire adult life I've never been without a job for more than two weeks. Jokes aside, if Texas ever did decided to secede from the US, it would probably have a pretty good chance at success given all the resources we have within our borders. To live here, you have to get used to being around people nearly all the time that do not speak English.
I'm not talking here and there occasionally. I mean that literally about percent of the people around you are from south of the border and do not speak or read English.
